18/10/2017 0 Comments Approaching the Still lifeThe Still life is a classical subject in realist art and provides ample challenges to learn about a structured working method, deepen drawing skills, train observation, judge values and colours, handling paint and composing an interesting scene. The picture here shows little snippets of the work I did on a still life with a metal object, some fruit, a wooden box and a dark piece of cloth.

15/10/2017 0 Comments Have values! When it comes to creating a successful drawing or painting one of the most important points to look into is getting your values right that will describe and carry all information about light, shadow and form. I am currently preparing a charcoal cast drawing and spent some time on defining a value scale that I will use as reference throughout my drawing.

I am very lucky to learn and train at this renown institute among very dedicated people. My goal here is to upgrade my techniques during this classical master atelier and to train my eye in translating from life. Another great aspect are the lectures in art history in the city of Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli and Donatello and numerous other fantastic artists while you can see so many of their original works here. It's great fun to work in a very international team of students where there is also find time to explore and enjoy the city to the fullest. The name "Uhlenhorst" means "owl nest" and came from some abandoned farm houses close to Hamburg with owls nesting in their ruins. This was 400 year ago and today this area is one of Hamburg's central city districts with beautiful urban living spaces, individual shops and premier views onto the Alster lake and Hamburg's city centre. The "Uhlenfest" takes place each year in August with many shops, stalls and entertainment. Meanwhile, the owl has become the symbol for the people of Uhlenhorst and also stands for a great community of caring neighbourhood, successful local businesses and people with an open view to the world. Two new works in ink and watercolour are on display during and after the Uhlenfest at the TAYAS coffee house. They are also available for purchase. Ink and water colour on paper Image size 22,5 x 16 cm (The painting is mounted into white passepartout, under glass in a black wooden frame 41,5 x 31,5 cm) Contact: info-artinuum@mail.com An intensive week of working on life portrait painting techniques with the American realist painter David Gray certainly goes very quickly. And if you ask what would be the take-away from this experience? Or, could one use it for the next painting that is up the easel or the next time the palette is about to be set up? From me that's a big fat YES! Regardless which nuances a realist artist favors in his work, this workshop will help to approach problems from a new angle, more confident and surely refines your very own painting method to set yourself up for success. In addition to the deep insides David was giving during his entire painting process, I found it very valuable that the fast progression of the workshop revealed any weaknesses in producing a correct drawing as well as the student's ability to handle values and colour relationships in the right way. The mix of self-judgment and critiques while working alongside various painters with different styles and experiences adds a lot value to the workshop and was probably one of the highlights for me. Apart from developing a convincing painting methodically, David was able to create an atmosphere of great respect, attention and focus to the work. I enjoyed this fantastic week in Manchester, the valuable discussions with fellow artists and the of course the great fun we all had together.
